After all, eating a burger and some fries does not take long does it? However, it has been scientifically proven that fast food is high in calories and excessive consumption will eventually lead to health issues like diabetes and heart disease. No fear, we are here to promote an alternative way to enjoy your food. Enter the Slow Food Movement.

An Italian named Carlo Petrini first established the Slow Food Movement in Italy with its forerunner organization, Agricola in 1986. The initial reason for setting up this movement was to oppose the opening of a MacDonald s outlet next to a national monument, the Spanish Steps. Since then, many other countries have joined the Slow Food Movement and right now there are over 100 000 members in 132 countries. The founders and participants of the Slow Food Movement consider themselves co-producers instead of consumers because by being informed about food production and supporting those who produce it, they are actually part of the production process.

Aspects of Slow Food

Slow food, in layman terms, is good, clean and fair food. It is food that tastes good. It is food that is clean as the production process does not harm the environment nor does it treat animals unethically. It is food that producers receive fair compensation for. The mission of the Slow Food members is to defend biodiversity in our daily food supply, provide taste education allow consumers to recognize more producers of food.

Taste Education

So what do we mean by taste education? Well, to put it simply, it is assisting both the young and the old to rediscover the simple happiness one can find in eating excellent food and the importance of knowing where, when and how the food they consume is made. As a part of the taste education program, Slow Food created the University of Gastronomic Sciences to offer a multi-disciplinary academic program in the sciences and heritage of food. Another aim of the university is to gather the in-depth research of food around the world and the little known secrets of farming and food production.

Make Informed Food Choices

We all know that industrialized food prices are very competitive. However, the problem with most industrialized food consumers is that few are actually informed on how the food is produced or where it comes from. Animals used to produce industrialized are often unethically treated. An example is battery farm chickens. They do not receive any sunlight at all and are kept in very small cages that impede their movement. Battery farm chickens are mass-produced in darkness. Transport used for industrialized food causes a lot of pollution as well. This is why the Slow Food Movement emphasizes the need to know where food comes from so that we can do our part in making selective, informed choices of food we consume.

Eat Fresh

Why join the Slow Food Movement? The Slow Food Movement is a way of making healthier and more informed choices about your food. It allows food to be cultivated in its natural course, hence ensuring maximum freshness unlike certain industrialized food.

Content copyright © 2010. Also, we noticed that people actually care about the food that they eat but are unwilling to give up meat due to health issues, and are also unreceptive to extreme changes made to their lifestyles. We conducted a survey to find out if our project was feasible. We targeted adults aged between 23 45 years old as we feel that these are the people who may want to and can make a change in lifestyles for the sake of themselves and the environment. Also, these are the people who can advise the older generation and teach the younger generation.

These are our results:

Have you heard of the Slow Food Movement?

Do You Know What this term means?

What makes up your main diet?

Do you know the rearing methods of animals you consume?

If there is a lifestyle that promotes healthy living, fair and quality nutrition, and is within financial, means, would you consider adopting it?

Content copyright © 2010. Fortunately, we are here to unravel the answers. Having said that, we will be exploring four different and convincing aspects on why you should consider adopting slow food as your new lifestyle.

Healthier Option

Let s start with the number one most important aspect of them all. Meet Mr Healthy .
In our current, fast-paced lifestyle, stress definitely knocks on our doors ever-so frequently. It is exasperating. That s just life. Here comes the ultimate remedy that will blow it away, just for that moment food. That s right. Food, and you want it fast. Fast food. However, we believe that there is a price to pay for what enters your body. I am sure everybody knows about the fat and calorie content in fast food, which in most cases is lingering in the unhealthy section. We get healthy living lessons in school occasionally and we are constantly reminded or informed in the papers about the high sugar and all the anything-that-kills-you-slowly content in such food items. But, only few actually listen; most just hear.

Ever asked yourself why you have been putting on those rather significant pounds that shows on your new bought Levi s? You will have to solve that brain-wrecking riddle yourself, unfortunately. Such a sign on your Levi s definitely leads to many health issues in the long run. The average Joe s jeans get wider by the year, it seldom goes the other way around.

Do you know&

The Top Killer Diseases
According to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), the diseases that account for the leading causes of death in the United States are:

1. Heart Disease
2. Cancer
3. Stroke
4. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases
5. Diabetes

3 out of 5 of the above are likely to be caused by eating habits. That is why we are so concerned. And that is exactly what we are here for.
Given such statistics, the Slow Food Movement is necessary to re-teach people the essentials of eating for health, pleasure and taste. Take it as a taste education, food education, health education; whatever you call it, our main purpose of the day is to get you to eat healthy but not compromising on the taste buds.

Reduce Individual carbon footprint

McDonald s sells 75 hamburgers per second, every minute, every hour of every day of the year; 4.2 million in a day in the US alone
That is a lot of burgers. And bacon. And cheese. And beef. And& .The current food production emphasizes on marketing efficiency to ensure high profits. The figures above show just one instance of the staggering levels of meat eaten but in a highly processed form. The newer methods of storage include freezing, packaging leads to numbing facts:
Meat is frozen for a year before made into hamburgers.
Slow Food addresses this issue right on spot. Slow Food emphasizes on eating fresh. Hence, you do not have to worry about your meat being stored for months anymore, you got to worry about how recent the meat was delivered from the farm. They say worries are delivered from one to another. Well that s just so right.

Ethically Sound:

<span style="padding: 6px;> Fair Trade

<span style="padding: 6px;> Battery Farms VS Free Range Chickens

Opportune Time:

You got to admit it. Singapore is getting richer. With the introduction of casinos like the Resort World and The Sands , there is a lot to expect!
Although there is a rising affluence, it must be admitted that not everyone has the financial capabilities to exercise healthier food options the Slow Food way, for instance, organic food, free-range chickens, and hormone-free poultry. We understand that it costs more. However there is a rising consciousness that eating healthier is a preventive measure against diseases. In other words, you are saving on high medical fees and medication which would definitely cost more in the long run.
On the other hand, it is the rich once again who can afford fine-dining cuisines, which are unethical in terms of the welfare and treatment of animals, such as foie gras, which is currently banned in Chicago. This is an ancient method employed as far back as 2500 BCE to prepare fowl. And yes, veal definitely goes into the list as well.
No questions raised, the rich starts it, and they get to end it.

Here s a quote: Singaporeans live 8 years longer but suffer 8 years of poor health Straits Times, December 3, 2007

Now, with more looser budgets, we are able to transform those 8 years into quality 8 years that we need not suffer. Or at least, reduce the suffering significantly. You are what you eat. And you definitely need to know what you eat.

Content copyright © 2010. Yeo Kang Le. A carbon footprint is a measurement of the impact humans daily activities have on their environment, and especially climate change. It refers to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels etc. Here s the evidence:

Sea temperatures have risen by on average 0.5 degrees C (0.9 degree F) over the last 40 years

Global surface temperatures have risen about 0.7°C in the past 100 years

Average annual temperature in the Arctic has increased by about 1° C over the last century

For the past 20 years the effect our activities on our environment has become more and more obvious.

If we continue to harm our environment, there will be permanent consequences:

An increase in average surface air temperature of about 2.5 degrees Celsius

Likelihood of killer heat waves during the warm season will increase

Sea level will rise, leading to increased coastal flood through indirect inundation and an increase in the base for storm surges

Further melting of the Arctic Ice Caps

Reducing our carbon footprints and any ill effects on our environment is every individual s responsibility. The Slow Food Movement does just that. With organic farming, no artificial fertilizers and no pesticides are used. That means that the pesticides will not pollute the soil, the water bodies, and the air which is so important to us.

Content copyright © 2010. Yeo Kang Le. He thus seeked the help of Professor Crawford, who specialises in the nutritional value of chicken. Professor Crawford says that industrialised chicken actually has a 100 more calories each than a chicken 30 years ago. Since intensive farming began, the levels of omega 3 in chicken have dropped by about 85%, a massive drop. They thus tested the nutritional value of industrialised chicken, indoor corn-fed chicken, and free-range chicken.

The results:

Standard chicken has very little omega 3, and when the public thinks they re getting protein, all their getting is fats

Corn-fed chicken has slightly more omega 3; however, it has more fat, which is typical of corn-fed animals

Free-range chicken has the most protein and omega 3 (10 times more than a standard chicken), because it is given time to grow its muscles. Also, it needs exercise, not to mention natural greens and grubs.

The chicken in the 21st century is not what she used to be 3 decades ago. Instead of being able to roam about with natural green and grubs, she is kept in a small cage with 3 9 other hens, cooped up and frustrated. Her cage is one of the few hundred thousand cages in a dark and gloomy shed. Deprived of the freedom to roam and the calcium to form egg shells, she can develop severe osteoporosis, otherwise known as caged layer fatigue. She suffers from the illnesses that birds deprived of exercise do: portions of egg clog her oviducts which then becomes inflamed and paralysed; her confinement has caused a new disease to develop: fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome characterized by an enlarged, fat, friable liver covered with blood clots, and pale combs and wattles covered with dandruff.
She lives in a poisoned atmosphere; toxic such as ammonia from the constant urine rises to her eyes, causing them to burn. The ammonia is so concentrated that some of it is absorbed by the eggs. At the end of the laying period? They go to the slaughterhouse, broken and bruised, de-beaked and de-feathered.

Content copyright © 2010. Yeo Kang Le. Without the use of pesticides and fertilizers the plants actually develop their own defense system in the form of chemicals called phenols. These chemicals are claimed to be healthier and more likely to prevent cancers and heart disease. Although the use of manure can lead to food poisoning, by composting the manure at a precise time and exact temperature the chances of bacteria infecting the food are greatly reduced. Environmentally Friendly It is believed that organic farming minimizes the use of chemicals and thus reducing any kind of environmental harm. Non-organic farming uses artificial fertilizer and pesticides which are unhealthy for the soil Price Crop rotations, better animal welfare and almost no usage of chemicals mean that organic food has to sold at a more expensive price. However, it can also be said that when paying for non-organic food consumers are also paying three fold: for the pollution of environment, for taxes, for the actual product.
Organic Food cannot feed the developing world! It is said that organic farming is not possible for the world s economy because the process takes too long. However, there is a bad side to non-organic farming as well. It is too concentrated and may destroy the fertility of the land and thus in the long run organic farming will secure the future for sustainable farming.

Content copyright © 2010. That s right. That cup of alluring latte. You see the inviting steam snake above that porcelain cup, luring you to take a quick sip, to savour the aroma, indulge in the flavor of the magical beans that produce such delicious delights; the coffee which you have paid $3 for; the beans for which the farmers receive merely 2 cents. And you dare drink that cup of coffee. That is what we are here for, to educate, to inform and most important of all, to remove that tingling guilt in every one of you. Allow us to introduce to you the wonders of Fair Trade. And yes, understanding it is the one and only way to do justice to those who have toiled and provided you with that luxurious sip.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a holistic approach to trade and development that aims to alter the ways in which commerce is conducted, so that trade can empower the poorest of the poor. It is not about charity. Fair Trade Organizations seek to create sustainableand positive change in developing and developed countries. Fair trade dates back to 1946 when Edna Ruth Byler, a volunteer for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), visited an MCC sewing class in Puerto Rico where she discovered the talent the women had for creating beautiful lace and the extraordinary poverty in which they lived despite their hard work. She started bringing these pieces back on her return to the United States to sell and returning the money back to these groups directly. Her work grew into Ten Thousand Villages , which opened its first fair trade shop in 1958 and is now the largest fair trade retailer in North America. In 1949, Sales Exchange for Refugee Rehabilitation and Vocation (SERRV International) began helping refugees in Europe recover from World War II. Today, they support artisans in more than 35 countries.

In A Nutshell

Basically, Fair Trade is not about paying workers in developing countries the wages of those in developed country, nor is it a form of charity. It is all about being fair, as its name suggests, and treating every single worker in this world with dignity and sincerity. They sweat hard, we pay them right. Things are just as simple as that. No cards up anybody s sleeve, no hidden costs , just reward and credit workers with their productivity and attitude with integrity.
Do not ever think that Fair Trade results in more expensive goods for consumers. Fair Trade organizations work directly with the producers, cutting out those exploitive middlemen and any other external associations that may threaten the sincere, dignified and justifiable treatment towards workers be it any country or even county. Principles are principles. People change. Principles do not. Keep to the principles of Fair Trade, not only will your coffee taste better the next time you purchase those coffee beans. Your heart will be a whole lot warmer too. Trust us.

Content copyright © 2010. Yeo Kang Le.
